Folks,
The tunnel enclosure was an issue 5 years ago and it was decided that it would be looked at as optional at the time with the challenge of putting it on the new tapered tunnel sleds. ISR said they would study and see how it worked.
Tunnel Enclosures are not required on stock sleds running Pro or Vintage Stock.
They are not required on the Radar Run side for trophy competition.

Recent events of several mishaps have brought this to ISR's attention and they want the rule enforced.

"4. (Improved Stock, Pro Stock and Modified classes) The rear of the tunnel must be enclosed with material comparable in strength to 0.063 aluminum sheet. The tunnel enclosure is required to reduce the possibility of skis and driver’s extremities entering the tunnel area. The shaded area (see illustration) must be enclosed. The enclosure shall cover the rear and both sides and extend forward a minimum of 14 inches. The bottom of the enclosure shall be no higher than one (1) inch above the center of the rear axle (with the driver in place). The rear of the enclosure shall be no further than 2.5 inches from the rear of the track.
REAR TUNNEL ENCLOSURE "

They are required for all running the Pro Classes in Improved stock and up.
I would say the biggest impact will be to the four stroke sleds running stock chassis with mods.

I discussed this with ISR and apparently they have had a few calls on it asking specifically and were told the same as this post.
ISR is enforcing this on all sleds Improved Stock and up on the Grass also, and racers have complied.
We need to see an effort to meet this rule and prevent the accidents under the tunnel with body parts.
Let me know if fitting your sled is an issue and how you plan to proceed if it is a challenge to get the tunnel enclosure installed.

Thanks for understanding on this item.

They are not required in stock classes. there was a recent accident in New York that the guy ended up under the tunnel of an Artic Cat Turbo that did a wheelie on launch in a drag race and brought the issue back to the surface. I will talk to Todd again.
You make some valid points, but again, Stock is not included at this time.
And, Speed Runners are not launching at high RPM off the Clay starting line.

I have talked with ISR and they have agreed to put it on the Agenda for our April Rules meeting.
This is not an issue for the older chassis, as it is a small panel at best.
For the custom chassis, most are built in.

is basically an issue for the new chassis sleds - and most are four strokes or only a few improvers.
Not a requirement for Stock!

I can work with the ones that are a challenge, just call me and let's discuss.
I don't see this as bad as it seems.
Also, I am open to the back part of the enclosure allowing wind to flow through, just needs to be set up to stop body from entering the tunnel zone.
Thanks!
Ron

It is on the agenda to discuss in April of 2018 at ISR.
So yes, you need to make an attempt to meet the rule.
I am fine to allow airflow through the back panel.
It does not apply to stock.
Thanks!
